Oral Sedation — Oral sedation is a popular option in many dental practices. Oral sedatives can be prescribed by the Dentist prior to treatment. There are many oral sedative and anti-anxiety medications that can be used based on each patients specific health history. Some of the medications offer “amnesic” properties, which mean that you will be conscious during the treatment but remember little to nothing.
Inhalation Conscious Sedation — Nitrous oxide is the oldest form of conscious sedation used in dentistry. This inhalation treatment can be used by itself or with anti-anxiety medications. A nitrous oxide and oxygen combination is inhaled through a nasal mask and within minutes provides a euphoric feeling. The combination of the oxygen with the nitrous oxide allows this treatment to wear off very quickly with no lasting effects.
