Your Summer Guide For Dental Emergency Prevention
You can’t avoid unexpected dental problems all the time, but here are a few tips that may help reduce your risk this summer:
*Eat Foods That Strengthen Your Teeth*
This is really something to keep in mind all year long. Your daily diet has a lot to do with the state of your dental health, for better or worse. Teeth that are decayed, weak, or brittle for lack of proper nutrition and good oral hygiene are far more vulnerable to damage.
So as much as possible, you should always include foods that contain the vitamins and nutrients that are going to keep your teeth strong and healthy.
Instead of filling the cooler and beach bags with sugar-packed, starchy convenience foods like chips, cookies, and crackers, take a little extra time to prep freshly-cut fruits and veggies like carrot and celery sticks, and apple and pear slices.
Add some extra calcium to the mix with yogurt packs and almonds.
Any time you can limit sugar and increase vitamins and minerals, you’re building stronger teeth, keeping your mouth cleaner, and making yourself a bit less susceptible to dental emergencies.
*Use Crushed Ice Instead Of Ice Cubes*
A great way to beat the heat when you’re out in the sun is with a nice, cold refreshing drink. When you’re filling your glass with ice, it’s better to go with crushed instead of cubed.
Crushed ice breaks down as you sip, so by the time you get to the bottom of the glass, they’re either melted or soft enough that they won’t hurt your teeth. Ice cubes, on the other hand, are hard against your teeth, so crunching down on them could risk damage to your tooth enamel.
While we want you to stay cool and well-hydrated this summer, we don’t want your teeth to suffer the consequences.
*Other Ways To Reduce Risk*
We tend to use our teeth as tools, especially during the summer.
We’ve all been there… you’re by the pool and all the kids are chomping at the bit waiting for you to help them gear up with swimmies, floaties, and water toys.
You’re trying to hurry, tearing open a new small raft with your teeth instead of running back into the house for a pair of scissors.
It seems like no big deal, but it’s just the sort of thing that can lead to a dental emergency. Your teeth are made to cut and tear food, not bits of packaging and hard plastic. You could damage your tooth enamel pretty easily using your teeth for tasks they’re not designed for.
Taking the time to grab the right tool for the job is a great way to reduce your risk of cracking, chipping, or breaking a tooth.
