Choose a natural, long-lasting dental crown.

Thanks to modern materials and technology, dental crowns have the potential to last well over a decade. Any time you’re getting something that will last this long — and that play such a prominent role in your daily life — it’s understandable to want to choose carefully! After all, you need a crown that will meet your treatment needs and wants while blending into your smile just as naturally as a real tooth. This is why we offer both e.max and zirconia crowns at our Duvall family dental office. We want you to be able to choose the right crown for you!

E.max and zirconia crowns are both made from cutting-edge materials that make them beautiful and long-lasting, but they each have their own strengths and weaknesses. Discovering these differences and trying to determine which type of crown is best for you can be difficult, however, and we want to help make the process of receiving a crown as easy and stress-free as possible for you. To help you save time and reach an educated decision, we’ve put together a guide on e.max and zirconia crowns that will help you determine which is best for you.

What are they made of?

E.max dental crowns are made of a glass-ceramic material that’s incredibly durable. Traditional porcelain crowns are about as durable as your natural teeth, but e.max crowns are even more durable. This means they’re less likely to chip, crack, or break. When they’re taken care of properly, they have the potential to last decades — perhaps even a lifetime! E.max crowns also look even more natural than traditional porcelain crowns because the material is slightly translucent, just like natural tooth enamel. This gives the crown an even more natural appearance. They can also be tinted to match the color of your natural teeth, so even from close up, no one will be able to tell your e.max crown isn’t a natural tooth!

Zirconia crowns are technically considered porcelain crowns because they’re made from an artificial stone, but this stone is made from a metal similar to titanium called zirconium dioxide. As a result, these crowns benefit from a balance between the strengths of metal and porcelain crowns. Like metal crowns, they’re extremely strong and durable, measuring an 8.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. This means they’re incredibly unlikely to chip, crack, or break, even when you’re eating the hardest foods out there. While they have the strength of metal, zirconia crowns are naturally white and can be tinted to match your natural teeth, so they look more like porcelain crowns. That said, they don’t look quite as natural as traditional porcelain crowns. We have a solution for this, though: ZMAX. This material blends zirconia with several other materials, helping your crown look natural while maintaining the strength of zirconia.

Which is better under what circumstances?

Zirconia crowns’ greatest strength lies in their durability. They can withstand extreme pressure without chipping, cracking, or breaking — and they can do it for decades! Durability and strength are vital characteristics for crowns being placed on your molars because you exert a surprising amount of force when you chew. This makes zirconia crowns an ideal choice for your molars. Plus, zirconia crowns look natural enough to blend in with your natural teeth when placed on your molars. Even though they don’t manage the same incredibly lifelike appearance as e.max crowns, they don’t need to withstand close examination on your molars. After all, your molars aren’t visible in your smile and are generally only seen in flashes when you speak or laugh, so your zirconia crown easily blends in just like a natural tooth.

When you need a crown on one of the teeth that show prominently in your smile, you want to ensure that the crown looks as natural as possible. This is where e.max crowns truly shine! Their natural translucency adds an extra level of depth to their natural appearance, allowing them to look just like a real tooth even from up close. You don’t have to worry about their durability, either, as e.max crowns are still incredibly durable. Plus, crowns placed on your front teeth don’t need the added durability of zirconia crowns because they don’t experience the same chewing pressure as molars. E.max crowns provide more than enough durability for your front teeth and look just like natural teeth, so they’re an ideal solution for your front teeth. They don’t just blend into your smile; they actively contribute to your smile’s beauty!

Is there a price difference?

Zirconia and e.max crowns both tend to be more expensive than traditional porcelain crowns, but the value you get back in the length of your crown’s life is worth it for many patients. Out of the two types of crowns, however, e.max crowns are the most expensive. This extra expense is another reason you may want to get an e.max crown only when the crown is going to be visible when you smile. When you’re getting a crown on a prominent tooth, however, an e.max crown can make all the difference for your smile. If you’re worried about your budget, our ZMAX solutions cost significantly less than e.max crowns but look natural, making them a good option for your front teeth.
